married in Boston

Saw the cutest video today from the City of Boston called "One Thing That Makes City Hall Special." City Hall here in town gets a bad rap because it's hideous.  Well, this video doesn't deny it, but it celebrates what happens on the 6th floor...weddings! Check it out:

cool content: Dark Rye from Whole Foods

 A coworker recently shared Dark Rye with me, an online magazine from Whole Foods and I think it's brilliant.  It's packed with stories centering around food, health, sustainability, design, tech and social enterprise. There's video and graphics and articles and photo essays - it's pretty cool and I suggest you check it out.  In this issue, we take a look inside Detroit.  After spending a little bit of time there myself last year telling some beautiful stories, I started to fall in love with Detroit; I think after skimming through this, you just might, too.

Here was one of my favorite videos about a guy who saw a need for transportation, so he started his own bus company.

on the road: Hong Kong

When I posted about Adult Spring Break in SF, I realized I never did a post about Hong Kong!  2013 started off in a blur when I departed for an around-the-world work trip that took me to LA, Hong Kong and London.  I was excited to go to two cities I love and one I had never been to - Hong Kong! And while it was a too short trip (I think we were there 3 nights and two days? I said it was a blur...), it was still fun to be somewhere new and do a little exploring.

on the road: the Neon Museum

Every time I go home, my mother and I try to do one new thing.  I've been drying to go to the Neon Museum Boneyard for years, but you always have to schedule a tour and spots are limited daily.  We finally got our act together last time and went.  Las Vegas is slowly collecting and refurbishing old signs and pieces of old Las Vegas to put up on downtown Las Vegas (read: Fremont St.).  They're also building a real museum, but I wanted to see the signs in the boneyard before it was too late.  I highly recommend you go the next time you're in Vegas.  Very cool and an awesome history lesson on Vegas from great tour guides.

street artist

I feel overwhelmed by the number of people calling themselves "street artists" these days, especially since Exit Through the Gift Shop came out last year.  Yet I can't help but find moments of wonder and curiosity in their work.  I love this short video WordtoMother at Fame Festival Italy 2010.  Special thanks to my new friend Ben for sending it to me.

Have to toot my own horn and show you this video I recently directed and edited for BostInnovation.com. They're Cinco de Mayo party was a blast and hopefully you get that from this video.

derby day!

 A tradition amongst my group of friends, we love dressing up for the Kentucky Derby and going to some day party.  This year was no different, complete with dollar bets on our favorite horses.  Alas, I was not the winner, but we still donned some fabulous hats, drank mint juleps and had a grand time.

Pretty light yesterday walking home.  I walk up this street everyday and these look like the pictures in my head when I think of my neighborhood.  I could see blowing them up and framing them some day.

yarn bombers

I've been itching to pick up knitting needles again and I love this article about gals in the South End "yarn bombing."  These graffiti knitters work includes wrapping colorful rectangles of knitting around lampposts, hanging mittens from trees, snaking a knit flower vine around a bike rack and tagging a dog park fence with knitted bugs.  I just make scarves.  Read more here. 

boston spot: back bay social club

New to town a year ago, Back Bay Social Club has quickly warmed to me and become my go-to Boston spot.  I had my birthday here and it was fabulous - great space downstairs, fun cocktails, friendly staff.  It's great for anything - dinner when the fam comes to town, happy hour on the patio, brunch with the girls, a night out for trouble.  It's warm, welcoming, the food is ohmygosh and I can't say enough good things about it.

They also have awesome cocktail events and parties all the time.  Up next?  A Guinness beer dinner - 4 courses made from local ingredients and paired with delicious beer.  Get your tickets here. 

on the road: austin

This past weekend, my little brother and I had the chance to visit our cousin in Austin.  I really love it there and was happy to go back for a getaway and also so Brother could see if he might like to go to school there.  Right off the bat, my cousin took me to one of the city's famous food trucks.  I felt so Bourdain, enjoying my gourmet sandwich from a tin trailer.

We toured the UT campus for Evan to check out.  It was quite nice and again, I thought about how great going to school there might be if someone where to offer me a free MBA.

The big weekend adventure was tailgating at the Texas vs. OK State game.  My college football tailgating experience is the occasional Boston College game where there are limited spots on the field and you tailgate two hours before and two hours after.  This was that, only on steroids.  First of all, everyone sets up the night before.

Second of all, our group started at 11am - for a 7pm game.  There was a massive spread of food, a big tent for cover, tons of different kinds of drinks, a hooked up flat screen and enough burnt orange to burn your eyes.

I couldn't but help get into the spirit to purchase my very own Texas shirt at the Co-Op.  We had a blast - thank you to my cousin Arch!
