ruthless editing

Contrary to popular belief, I am a purger.  Even my friend Nick was helping me move once and said, "no offense, but I thought you'd have more stuff."  Nope!  I try my best to be a minimalist.  The one thing I have a problem with is my vast collection of books.  I have a hard time getting rid of any.

But with the weather getting cold, I am gearing up for another season of purging.  When it's miserable outside, why not take care of business around the house?  Time to clean out the closet, ask myself what I do and don't need and ruthlessly cut objects out of my life.

I discovered this great video today on The Improvised Life about the "less, but better" movement:

Graham Hill of Treehugger Introduces LifeEdited from jovoto on Vimeo.

I thought it was a pretty good manifesto and although I'm not ready to put a bathroom sink in my hallway or anything, I do love the concept of making room only for the very best stuff.  I do that with every aspect of my life - surround myself with the best people, try to eat the best food & buy only things that I absolutely love.  And while I don't want to hate on cheap clothing places like H&M and Forever21 (because you know I shop there), my wardrobe has held up pretty well because it's supplemented by items I've invested in and know I'll have forever.

Create your own purging season over the next few months and get rid of the stuff you don't need, papers that sit around, clothes that remain unworn, kitchen items that take up space and people that make you feel shitty.  Yeah, I said shitty.

Oh, and if you too have a small space, check out the lifeedited.org website featured on the video and draw on some of my own inspiration.

(I love the idea of turning a closet or awkward nook into a chic office space)
